According to BBC Sport, DR Congo Striker Cedric Bakambu has become the most expensive African footballer with his £65million move from La Liga side Villarreal to Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan.
They suggest this transfer fee moves him ahead of Gabon international striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in that ‘expensive’ category, with the Ex-Borussia Dortmund forward holding that transfer record since moving to North London club Arsenal at the end of the winter transfer window.
Cedric Bakambu has shone in Spain and will now become the newest high-profile player to move from a European league to chase the cash on offer in China.
The 26-year-old forward played over 100 games for La Liga side Villarreal, netting 46 goals before his exit was eventually confirmed today.
It’s fair to state the fees paid by Chinese teams at the moment distorts footballers’ values somewhat, with Emerick Aubameyang the better and more proven player at the highest level.
The Gabon star was very prolific during his spell with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, even if he is yet to get going in as a Gunner after joining in the middle of the campaign.
Still, the latest Chinese import is also a talent lad and should have little issue scoring for fun in the Chinese Super league.
Chinese media, where the new League campaign begins on Friday and ends in November, have reported that Cedrick Bakambu will receive an annual gross pay of 22 million.
The only African player ever to receive Spanish La Liga’s Player of the Month award, Cedrick Bakambu was one of the top goalscorers in the La Liga, with nine goals scored, when he left Villarreal.
